DAVOS, Switzerland -- If Canada wants to repeat as Spengler Cup champion, its going to happen the hard way. Andres Ambuhl scored the winning goal late in the third period as host HC Davos beat Canada 3-2 Saturday. Canada falls to 1-1 and must now play the Rochester Americans in a quarter-final on Sunday. If they win that, theyll play a semifinal Monday night for a chance to advance to Tuesdays final, which takes place at noon local time. "It looks like Mount Everest, but you just take it a game at a time and inch your way forward," Canada coach Doug Shedden said. Marcus Paulsson and Peter Guggisberg also scored for Davos, while Mika Noronen made 24 saves. Darren Haydar and Byron Ritchie had Canadas goals. Allen York stopped 20 of 23 shots. It looked like it was going to be a relatively easy win for Davos when Ambuhls goal gave the hosts a 3-1 lead with less than three minutes to go in regulation. But Canada kept up the pressure, and Ritchie made it a one-goal game with less than two minutes to go. Canada pressed for the tying goal but was unable to beat Noronen. Ritchie had a chance at the tying goal with just over a minute left, but he was unable to contain the puck with an open net to shoot at. "Davos is a speedy team. Theyve got all kinds of skill level," Shedden said. "Youre not going to beat them in their rink unless you play 60 minutes and we were a little disappointed in our first half of the game. "We were playing the neutral zone game a bit too much maybe because they are so fast and we were trying to respect their speed, then in the third period we said lets go for it and put the pressure on them and it seemed to pay dividends for us. But a little bit too late." After a scoreless period, Davos used their speed to assert themselves with two goals in the second. Paulsson opened the scoring at 7:19 of the second period, then Guggisberg put Davos up 2-0 at 11:43. Canada made a game of it, with Haydar narrowing the lead to 2-1 4:45 into the third. But after Ambuhl restored Davoss two-goal lead at 17:01, Canada was unable to bridge the gap. Shedden expects a different challenge Sunday from the Americans, who are the Buffalo Sabres American Hockey League affiliate. "Its going to be a more North American style of game," Shedden said. "Youre going to see a lot more of a physical game tomorrow night. Obviously we have a much older team and theyre young up-and-coming stars in the NHL. "The bottom line is weve got to find a way to win." Dominic Moore Jersey . Bostons bats exploded in Mondays opener, as David Ortiz belted a pair of two-run homers, Stephen Drew homered and drove in four runs and the Red Sox pummeled the Blue Jays, 14-1. If there is one club built to handle an off-field controversy, its the Bill Belichick era Patriots. Even if New Englands offence stumbles a bit out of the gate, their defence can help them stay in games, especially in the AFC East with the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets in the first two weeks. David Pastrnak Jersey . "I only want to go through this one more time," Crosby said Friday. The 24-year-old captain hasnt played since the symptoms resurfaced following a loss to Boston on Dec. 5. Doctors allowed him to return to full practice on Tuesday and while Crosby is pleased with the way his body is responding he refuses to put on his return. Riley Nash Jersey . -- Masahiro Tanaka knows that first appearance in a spring training game for the New York Yankees will be scrutinized.(SportsNetwork.com) - The Dallas Mavericks are sputtering a bit, but theyll try to get back on track Wednesday night when the New Orleans Pelicans visit American Airlines Center. The Mavs have lost two of three since a five-game winning streak. The first loss came at home to the Phoenix Suns, but on Tuesday, Dallas blew a 10-point lead en route to a 114-105 road loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. The Mavericks converted 18 3-pointers in the loss and were down in by a disastrous third quarter. The Grizzlies outscored the Mavs, 36-17, and never looked back. The third quarter was obviously our downfall in the game, head coach Rick Carlisle acknowledged. We did a poor job and it cost us. I like the way we hung in. We kept fighting. We actually had a shot to take the lead in the fourth, but losing the third quarter by 19 points was a killer. Chandler Parsons shot 6-of-10 from behind the arc and matched Memphis Marc Gasol with 30 points. Jameer Nelson finished with 18 points for Dallas, while J.J. Barea netted 17 off the bench. Dallas usually productive duo of Dirk Nowitzki and Monta Ellis combined to shoot 5-of-28 from the field (17.9 percent) for 13 points. Ellis played through an elbow injury and made only one of his 11 attempts in a two-point effort. Weve got to see how hes doing tomorrow, Carlisle said of Ellis Tuesday night.dddddddddddd. Its just a very tough situation for him, so hopefully its more of a day-to-day thing and hopefully hes feeling a lot better tomorrow. But well have to wait and see. The Pelicans have taken two straight to get back to .500. On Sunday, New Orleans toppled the Los Angeles Lakers by 17 at the Staples Center, then came back home and secured a 104-93 victory over the New York Knicks at the Smoothie King Center on Tuesday. Tyreke Evans poured in 27 points and the Pelicans put together a strong fourth quarter to come away with the win over the Knicks. Evans netted eight points and Omer Asik had seven during a final period in which the Pelicans outscored New York by a 27-20 count to pull away and sent the Knicks to a ninth consecutive loss and 10th in a row on the road. Evans was really good at attacking the basket, Pelicans head coach Monty Williams said. Asik finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds, while Anthony Davis put up 18 points and eight boards in the win. Jrue Holiday added 13 in the win, which saw the Pelicans shoot 50 percent from the field. The Mavericks have beaten the Pelicans eight straight times, including a five- point win in New Orleans on Nov. 1. Dallas is 9-1 in its last 10 as the host in this series.
